Therapeutic Exercise
Exercise is an important component in our everyday lives, but when an injury or surgery decreases our ability to function, specific exercises that allow us to move and live are a must. Exercise programs are designed to meet each patient's individual needs and techniques are reviewed to ensure patients are performing them properly for carry over to home.
Balance / Fall Prevention
Because balance problems limit safe mobility, they can severely limit independence and daily life function as well as leisure pursuits. Difficulties with walking on uneven surfaces (stairs, carpeting, lawns, etc.), in busy visual environments (i.e. shopping), or at night can cause a person to limit their participation in activities to avoid embarrassment or risk of falling. Exercises and activities can be customized to improve a patient's balance and reduce their risk of falls.
Manual Therapy
Human touch is an important tool in physical therapy. While hands on techniques can be used to assess dysfunctions, they are also important tools to improve range of motion and flexibility, decrease soft tissue restrictions, reduce pain/swelling/inflammation and induce relaxation. Some techniques include:
Joint Mobilization / Manipulation
Myofascial Release
Craniosacral
Soft Tissue and Scar Mobilization
Muscle Energy
Modalities
To facilitate optimal healing, we utilize the latest therapeutic machines to help control inflammation (irritation), muscular tension, and pain. Some of the modality machines include ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, mechanical traction, iontophoresis, phonophoresis and TENS.
Postural-Body Mechanic Instructions
We provide information on ideal alignment from sitting to lifting. This information will help reduce the daily stress that basic activities may cause if we position our bodies incorrectly and may include:
• Core Strengthening • Proprioceptive Retraining • Lumbar Stabilization
Kinesio Taping®
The Kinesio Taping® Method is a definitive rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion. It can also extend the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting. Latex-free and wearable for days at a time, Kinesio® Tex Tape is safe for populations ranging from pediatric to geriatric, and successfully treats a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions. Melissa has been a Certified Kinesio Taping Practioner since 2011.
Integrative Dry Needling
Integrative dry needling, which is not acupuncture, is an effective tool based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific study that enhances the body's ability to heal. Fine filament needles are inserted into skin and underlying muscle to reduce muscle tightness and improve blood flow which will decrease inflammation and ultimately alleviate pain. Dry needling is an excellent adjunct to other treatment techniques.
